Daddy Issues
‘Daddy Issues’ is an out of picture sequence exploring Alberto’s backstory. During the film, Alberto’s Father returns and briefly reunites with Alberto. It was a turning point for the boys in that iteration of the film, as Alberto has to confront the truth that his Father doesn’t want to take him away from the Island, and Luca realizes he’s all Alberto’s got at this point.
Things that the boys have buried through the film come out and Luca convinces Alberto that they can join the human world together in a moment of love and empathy.
Spitting Contest
This was a self directed brainstorm for ‘Luca’, to find isolated comedic moments that felt like real young boy behavior. At the time, the ‘Luca’ gang was a Trio of Boys. Alberto, the alpha who claimed he knew more than he did about Humans, and Luca the endlessly curious and sheltered friend and a boy named Ciccio, who was the grateful-to-be-included third wheel.
In this scene Alberto is trying to teach Luca to act human in preparation for a visit to the human town. It’s a moment of pure silliness and comedy, with the goal of making the room of story people and directors laugh and have a good time, offering fun and opportunities when it was tough.
